The Pharmacy Chick

Flying the Coop in Retail

Just what I need!

I got to work today to an unusual calmness around the store.  There weren’t too many in the que and the store was rather quiet , even for 8 am.  I found out later that there was no school today.  I checked the calendar and noted NO specific holiday.   I asked somebody in the know (parent with kids) why there was no school today and he said “Teacher work day”….  wassat??  “teacher work day without kids around to get their stuff done”

I thought about that for a minute and thought “WOW !! I need one of those!”.. lets pretend for a while:

First day of every month is Pharmacist work day.  No  new prescriptions will be filled (tho I can see keeping the que empty)  No patients will be seen.  No phone calls will be answered.  On this pharmacist work day,  the Chick and her staff will handle all the tasks that have to be squeezed in will be done as they should be.  The schedule will be written.  The shelves will be checked for outdates.  Inventory counts and updates will be made.  The returns will be processed.  The corporate reports will be collected, signed off and filed.   The inspection reports will be filed. The invoices would be reconcilled.  All the rx’s would be in order and shelved. The counters would be dusted and washed off.  These things alone would take up the entire day.  And they would get done!!

What a novel idea..  I have heard of Dr’s offices that have days where no patients are seen, but work gets done.  Why not here?

Yea…I know, it will never happen… but WHAT A GREAT IDEA!

And THAT is why teacher’s jobs are what are commonly known in my house as ‘cushy jobs’

I can’t even get 5 minutes to eat! My company would NEVER let me have a whole day to take care of these things.

I tried to convince my boss that if I were to have a 30 min lunch break that I would stay and “catch up” on my work while I ate. He didn’t believe me. I told him that you could hold me to it and monitor my computer usage to make sure that I was there. I believe my next break is when I am 6 feet under

I call it a “catch up on some shit” day.

And no, I’ve never taken one, either.

I think teacher days are a laugh. teachers here complain about their pay and conditions, saying they have to do 2-3 hours every evening to sort out lesson plans etc. well, you start at 8.30, finish at 3.30, so if you factor in your lunch break (lets say an hour) and then add your supposed 3 hours extra work on top, i make that 9 hours, still 1 hour short of my working day. factor in the 10 weeks fully paid holidays a year and pay and conditions start looking pretty cushy to me.

I used to work at a government hospital. On my way down the hall, before I hit the door to walk into my daily crucible of pharmacy work, I would see these ladies talking to each other across the hall, cups of coffee in hand. They were clocked in, and on the job, and they enjoyed this quiet moment. I was about to walk into my usual war zone, and they are having a kaffeeklatsch at what is usually my opening gun time. I thought, by comparison, they should be docked pay.

At one time, there really were hours called “bankers’ hours.” Bank lobbies would open at 09:00 and close at 15:00. Six lousy hours, and hours where their clientele would have to line up dutifully at their windows, and always with one window with a table sign that read, “Next window, please.” WTF? If you’re only working for six hours, folks, you better staff EVERY friggin’ window in the place so we don’t have to wait for you to print your little receipts.

The Angriest Pharmacist just posted the story of a lady who gave the pharmacy staff a very hard time about looking her record up by birthday (the “don’t ask a woman how old she is” thing, which I thought was something that ended with the burning of the bras in the 1970s). I read the post carefully, and saw how cruelly the pharmacy staff was being treated. What would happen if you treated your bank teller the same way? Would she/he not cash your check? I wouldn’t blame him/her.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I would like one of those please! What a great idea, pharmacy chick! The only day we are closed is Christmas, so I guess it would have to be then. Still, very tempting, considering the state of my current store.

Wow….get jealous much folks?

Just because the teachers were smart enough to negotiate contract days for clerical tasks without students present doesn’t mean you have to get so nasty about it.

My husband works from 6 am until 530 pm at school mon-fri, and still ends up taking the grading for his 200 students home with him for the weekend. (High school math).

The summer has several required training courses. He does end up with about a month off during the 8 weeks of summer break.

He has missed more family events due to his job than I ever will…and I am an ICU nurse who works weekend and holiday rotations. In an inner city school he had his life threatened by a student. In another he had students confess drug addictions, abuse, the students confide in him. He makes all of 39000 a year after 8 years of his profession, I make almost double that after 5 years of mine. I work only 3 shifts a week (12 hours a piece).

Can’t we vent about our jobs in healthcare without slamming other professions?
All Right missy, why dont you just simmer down and re-read my post? There was not one word in that post that was slamming teachers or the work they do. You prove ONE NEGATIVE STATEMENT AND I WILL RETRACT IT. I said I would like to have a “pharmacist work day” without all the patients…so i can get some of my other work done. END OF STORY..
