Flying the Coop in Retail

They cannot have it both ways

He came in and handed me the script. I knew what was coming. “Brand only” Okee fine, I have no issue with that. It what always happens next that drives me to distraction. Its the bitching about the price that he does. I can fill the way they want it–brand for $200+ for a 90 day supply of Norvasc or I can do $15.00 for the generic, same manufacturer.

“No, generic doesn’t work”. Then fork over the $200.00+.

You cannot have it both ways. Every time we have this conversation, its the same. They complain about how much medicine costs and every time I offer the generic. Every time they decline. This time they thought they would trump me. “Maybe we should fill our prescriptions someplace else” they said. “Ok, I’ll buy you lunch if they are any less there for the same thing”.

They are still here…and still buying brand. I am thinking they aren’t as awash in cash as they used to be because they never used to whine. Now its all they do. I can fix it. They just won’t let me.

Oh I hate that! It’s worse when you tell them the price beforehand and they give you a stupid look and say something like “OK..What are you waiting for?!” Then they pay for it and walk away, 2 minutes later they come back pissed off at the price because ‘they have insurance. see? here’s the card’

Once this lady paid for her brand, turned around and wanted generic. I told her that I would have to reverse the claim and run it for generic and there’s going to be another wait period. She insisted so I called the manager to reverse the transaction, then I reversed the claim and reran it for generic - only to be told, “Oh..nevermind then it’s ok - i’ll just take the brand” I had to reverse it again and she was wondering why it took so long because it’s already done isn’t it?

Ever had anyone try to negotiate on the pricing? Anyway I love your blog PC! Update soon!

I have at least 20 people like that. The worst part is that my corpopharm’s RX Supervisor is hounding to get our generic fills up and get rid of some of the brands we have to carry for these picky people. Some of the “bubble” people, as I call them, have switched — we convinced Jane Doe that she’d much rather pay $10 for medroxyprogesterone as compared to over $100 for Depo-Provera, but that’s about as far as it goes. I actually resent having to special order so many things in, because the rest of my staff forgets to put it back on order, so the next month, they come in and freak out at me when I can only offer 3 tablets until I can get more in. Yet, when I get them in, and the difference has increased in the price, so they have to pay copay + difference between brand and generic, they get all mad at me. I think generic things like this are basically a no-win situation for us.

pharmsucks,
Been there, done that, the floor is littered with hair I have pulled out dealing with it.
Ya just wanna choke em when they do that. We should be able to charge them a service fee for doing stuff twice…or more!
Thanks for reading!
